The course is built around three units:
- climate change, global warming and sustainability
- the role of industry in protecting the environment
- resource management, including energy efficiency, carbon reduction and water efficiency
Much of the learning is practical, using the school grounds and the surrounding UNESCO North Devon Biosphere as a living resource.

The qualification is coursework-based, so pupils are assessed on projects and practical work across the two years rather than a single final exam. It rewards pupils who build understanding steadily and enjoy applying it to real situations.

Where it leads
The course is a strong foundation for further study in environmental science, geography and land-based routes in the Sixth Form and beyond. It sits at the centre of the Earth Centre strand of the Expansive Curriculum, recognised with the Eco-Schools Green Flag, and links closely to Geography and Science.
