What cookies are
Cookies are small text files stored on your device when you visit a website. We also use similar technologies, such as scripts that measure how pages are used. In this policy, "cookies" covers both.
We only set cookies that are strictly necessary until you tell us otherwise. Analytics and marketing cookies stay off unless you accept them in our cookie banner.
Changing your choices
You can change or withdraw your consent at any time by selecting Cookies in the footer of any page. This reopens your privacy settings, where you can switch each category on or off. Your choice is remembered for 6 months, after which we will ask again.
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Guidance is available for Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari.
Essential cookies
These are needed for the website to work and cannot be switched off.
- ths-cookies-consent: remembers your cookie choices, with a consent ID and the date so we can keep a record of your consent. Set by our consent tool. Expires after 6 months.
Our forms also use Cloudflare Turnstile to block spam. It checks your browser to confirm you are a person and does not track you across other websites.
Analytics cookies
These help us understand how the website is used so we can improve it. They are only set if you accept Analytics cookies.
Google Analytics 4
- _ga: distinguishes visitors with a randomly generated ID. Expires after 2 years.
- ga[container ID]: keeps track of your session. Expires after 2 years.
To opt out of Google Analytics on every website you visit, you can install Google's opt-out browser add-on.
Contentsquare
Contentsquare produces heatmaps and session recordings that show how visitors scroll, click and move around our pages. Text you type into forms is never recorded, and we do not record visits to our application and enquiry form pages. Recordings are used only to find and fix problems with the website.
- _cs_id: distinguishes visitors with a randomly generated ID. Expires after 13 months.
- _cs_s: records the number of pages viewed in a visit. Expires after 30 minutes.
- _cs_c: stores consent settings for session recordings. Expires after 13 months.
- _cs_optout: records that you have opted out of Contentsquare, if you do. Expires after 13 months.
Marketing cookies
These help us measure and improve our advertising. They are only set if you accept Marketing cookies.
Meta (Facebook and Instagram)
- _fbp: identifies your browser so Meta can measure the results of our adverts. Expires after 3 months.
- _fbc: stores the advert click that brought you to our site. Expires after 3 months.
Personalisation cookies
We do not currently use any personalisation cookies. The category appears in our privacy settings so we can ask for your consent if we add them in future.
Embedded content from other websites
Some pages include content hosted by other services. These services may set their own cookies and collect information about you, in line with their own privacy policies:
- YouTube videos in some news stories (Google privacy policy)
- Google Maps on our home, contact and university destinations pages (Google privacy policy)
- Our Instagram feed, shown through Elfsight (Elfsight privacy policy and Instagram privacy policy)
- Canva-hosted newsletters in some news stories (Canva privacy policy)
