Prep curriculum, Years 3 to 6

Our prep school curriculum in Years 3 to 6 is broad, varied and engaging, built on the belief that children learn best when they are enjoying their work. Strong foundations in literacy, numeracy and STEM sit alongside an Expansive Curriculum taught by specialists, and the whole of it is enriched by our grounds, the Earth Centre and specialist Senior School resources.

A broad Core Curriculum

Firm foundations, with high expectations at every level

The Core Curriculum gives every child firm foundations in literacy, numeracy and STEM. Learning is enriched through programmes such as robotics, where children develop creativity, collaboration and confident problem-solving.

Work is clearly differentiated and expectations are high, so each child is stretched at the right level while being fully supported. PSHE runs through every curriculum area rather than sitting apart from it, so wellbeing and character are part of ordinary lessons.

Specialist teaching and Senior facilities

The step up to senior education starts early and gently

The Expansive Curriculum is delivered by specialist teachers across drama, languages, art and design, Forest School, music and environmental education. Prep children also have access to specialist teaching resources in the Senior School and to specialist sports staff.

Judo takes place in the school's own dojo and gymnastics in a fully equipped gymnasium, alongside team and individual sport.

Reading and literacy

Every child reads every day

Reading is a daily, dedicated part of the timetable, and progress is monitored through our Accelerated Reading programme, so teachers can match books to ability and keep each child moving forward.

Regular reading underpins confidence across every other subject.

Sport and the outdoors

The grounds and the coast are part of how children learn

A broad programme, built for a lasting enjoyment of being active.

  • surfing from Year 1, within Coastal Adventures under Outdoor Education

  • swimming lessons at Northam Swimming Pool

  • tag rugby, football and netball

  • judo in the school’s own dojo

  • gymnastics in a fully equipped gymnasium

  • athletics through the summer term

  • environmental work connected to the Earth Centre and our Ecology Zone

Music and the arts

Room to find where interests lie

Music is part of school life from the earliest years, with instrumental lessons available from Year 2. Alongside drama, art and design, this gives children room to perform, make and create with growing confidence.

Ready for the next stage

By Year 6, the next step already feels familiar

Children have been taught by subject specialists, have used Senior School resources and have a settled record of achievement across a wide curriculum. Clearly differentiated work with high expectations means each child is known and moved on at their own pace, so they arrive at senior school confident, capable and prepared.
