What you will study
The course works through all four IELTS Academic components, with authentic exam tasks, timed practice and targeted feedback:
- Listening: following lectures, discussions and conversations, identifying main ideas, detail and implied meaning, with note-taking across a range of question types
- Reading: handling academic texts such as journal articles, reports and essays through skimming, scanning and close reading, and evaluating arguments and evidence
- Writing: Task 1, describing visual data such as graphs, tables and diagrams, and Task 2, a formal academic essay, with a focus on clarity, coherence and academic style
- Speaking: the personal interview, the individual talk and the two-way discussion, building fluency, pronunciation, accuracy and the confidence to justify opinions
Alongside IELTS, students get personalised support with grammar and vocabulary and guidance on subject-specific tasks, which strengthens their work across their chosen A Level and BTEC subjects.
How it is assessed
Students complete regular practice tests under timed conditions to master the exam format and build test-taking strategy, with personalised feedback identifying strengths and areas to improve. The IELTS Academic test itself is sat externally and reported on the international IELTS band scale.
Where it leads
By the end of the course, students know the format and expectations of IELTS Academic, have the academic English needed for higher education and professional settings, can manage their time to get the most from each paper, and can demonstrate their English at an international standard, ready for university entry in the UK and worldwide.
