A-Level Biology

Year 12 covers biological molecules, cells, the exchange of substances and genetic information. Year 13 moves on to energy transfer, how organisms respond to their environment, genetics and evolution, and the control of gene expression. Field trips and group work run alongside the theory, and Year 13 includes a synoptic essay that draws the whole course together.

Biology is assessed by written examinations at the end of the course. Students complete twelve required practical experiments across the two years, earning the Practical Endorsement that sits alongside the A-Level, with the Biosphere on the doorstep for ecology field work.

Biology is required for Medicine and most medicine-related and bioscience degrees, and it opens careers in medicine, veterinary science, research, healthcare and conservation. Students aiming at Medicine or Oxbridge can draw on the Top Universities Programme, and can add breadth through the EPQ or a further subject via Kingsley Online.
