Kingsley Hosts Martin Clunes for Appledore Book Festival Opening Night

Kingsley School Devon was delighted to host actor, author, and much-loved television personality Martin Clunes as part of the Appledore Book Festival 2025. The evening, held in our theatre, marked a sparkling start to this year’s festival and drew an enthusiastic audience from across North Devon.

In conversation, Martin spoke warmly and with great humour about his new book, Meetings With Remarkable Animals. The book celebrates the extraordinary and sometimes life-saving relationships between humans and animals — from search and rescue dogs and mine-sniffing rats to life-saving dolphins. He also reflected on the animals that have shaped his own life, including his decision to adopt a former guide dog.

Alongside these heartfelt stories, Martin entertained the audience with anecdotes from his distinguished career. From his breakout role in Men Behaving Badly to his iconic portrayal of Doc Martin, and his many acclaimed documentaries, he gave a fascinating insight into a life both on-screen and alongside animals.

The evening began with a special performance by Ruby, one of Kingsley’s talented musicians, who played the harp during the VIP reception, creating an elegant and welcoming atmosphere for guests.

Kingsley School is proud to support the Appledore Book Festival and to welcome such an inspiring guest to our campus. We extend our thanks to the festival organisers, Martin Clunes and sponsors, and to everyone who joined us in celebrating this wonderful evening of conversation, community, and remarkable stories.
