Top Tips for A-Level and GCSE Students on Results Day

Top Tips for A-Level and GCSE Students on Results Day

Exam results day is just around the corner, and we know it can bring a mix of excitement, nerves, and uncertainty. Whether you’re waiting for your A-Level results on Thursday 14th August or your GCSE results on Thursday 21st August, it’s natural to feel the pressure after all your hard work.

At Kingsley School Devon, we want every student to remember that results are only part of your journey. You have achieved so much already in your studies, in your personal growth, and in the way you’ve tackled challenges along the way. Whatever the outcome, there are always options, opportunities, and a community here cheering you on.

To help you feel prepared, positive, and supported, here are our top tips for navigating results day with confidence.

1. Maintain Your Routine—Even Amid the Wait

Keeping a structured routine helps counteract the anxieties that can flourish in idle moments. Stick to regular sleep patterns, get some fresh air, eat well, and keep yourself active, even if it’s a run or a walk. Your mind and mood will thank you.

2. Schedule “Worry Time”

It's completely normal to feel anxious or overwhelmed, but don’t let it dominate your day. Set a strict "worry window" (e.g., 20–30 minutes each day) to process your thoughts, then gently redirect your attention elsewhere. Its also wise  to be strict with how much time you spend discussing exam results.

3. Visualise Alternatives Ahead of Time

Mentally mapping out scenarios can reduce panic if things don't go as planned. Explore options like appeals, clearing for university, apprenticeships, or vocational courses, even gap years.

4. Choose How You’ll Receive Results (and With Whom)

Whether you want to open them privately with close family or friends, or with a schoolmate by your side—plan it so it feels manageable. Decide howYOU want to get YOUR results.

5. Be Your Own Champion—Avoid Comparisons

Remember: everyone's journey is unique. Schools can be intense on results day, with a wide range of emotions around you. Remind yourself, that academic success is just one of many attributes to be celebrated.

6. Self-Care Still Matters

Even on results day, simple self-care can work wonders, whether that’s going for a walk, a swim, or simply doing something you love. These activities will help give you a mental break and take yourself away from it all.

7. Tap into Support Systems

Never hesitate to ask for help, from school counsellors and teachers to career advisors or parents. According to the Department for Education and Parentkind, parents being calm and available and letting their child lead how they approach results can be a powerful source of support.

8. Be Prepared to Adapt

If your grades are different from what you expected, don’t panic:

  • If above expectations: celebrate, and if you're considering a different path (like UCAS Adjustment or Clearing), go for it. Here is a helpful article from WhatUni

What to do if your Grades are better than expected

9. Remember, Results Don’t Define You

Exams are just one step in a much broader journey. Many successful people followed unconventional paths, take Liv Conlon, who went on to run million-pound businesses despite stepping away from traditional education.

Results day will undoubtedly stir a mix of excitement, nerves, or even disappointment. But whichever way it goes, remember:

  • You’re not alone, and choices abound.

  • Support is available, so reach out.

  • Your identity isn’t defined by a grade, nor is your potential limited by one day.
